Social Science Research Internship in Vienna (2-3 months)

Social Science Research Internship in Vienna (2-3 months)

Are you looking for an internship in housing studies, migration studies, urban development, architecture, urban planning, urban sociology, or cultural studies? Do you want to gain more experience in social science research? Then apply for our social science research internship in Vienna.

The start date and duration of the internship: July 01 until August 31, 2024.

Workload: 20/h week.

Payment: 480€ ERASMUS+ grant (Austria), we increase the monthly payment to a total of 600€ per month.

Application deadline: March 31, 2024

To apply, please send us an email with a MOTIVATION LETTER and your CV (both documents can be written in English or German) to: [email protected]

We, the team of Search and Shape - Institute for Applied Social Science, conduct social science research and interventions on issues of housing, urban development and migration. We work in teams and have a transdisciplinary approach. Our work involves a) conducting qualitative research, including participant observation, interviews, etc. b) processing the material into research reports, graphics, maps, online platforms, exhibitions and pedagogical concepts. In addition, we are also involved in planning in the areas of housing and neighbourhood development. Search and Shape works on five types of projects:

1] Scientific research / 2] Partnership in international research projects / 3] Contract research 4] Exhibitions, museum education, art installations / 5] Planning in the field of social sustainability in housing estates and neighbourhoods

For further information: https://www.searchandshape.at/

What do we offer?

During the summer of 2024, we are running a research project in the field of urban development and cultural policy. We are conducting a study at the nexus of neighbourhood research and the evaluation of cultural programmes provided by municipal institutions: you will be involved in local stakeholder analysis, conducting interviews, participant observation and your individual project, and finally taking part in the data evaluation process.

We are a small team. Therefore, you will be working very closely with all of us on this project. We think that having an ERASMUS+ trainee will motivate us to bring in new perspectives, try different methods and thus broaden the scope of this research project. In Vienna, the day-to-day work will vary between conducting fieldwork, qualitative interviews and surveys, transcribing and interpreting these with your colleagues, and presenting research findings to internal and external partners. The workload will be 20 hours per week. You will work mainly in the field OR from home. Office space for meetings.

What are we searching for?

We're looking for an intern, for a minimum stay of 2 months, with an Erasmus+ grant (we can help with the process). In addition to the 480€ ERASMUS+ grant for interns in Austria, we can increase the monthly payment to a total of 600€ per month. Again, start date and duration of the internship: 01 July to 31 August 2024. Workload: 20 hours per week.

We are looking for a Master's student, preferably in one of the following disciplines: social anthropology, sociology, political science, geography, urban planning, architecture or applied arts. In addition to working with us on the research project, we invite you to focus on a research site (a neighbourhood involved in our project) in Vienna, to follow your interests, and to engage in your own personal research project. If you already have some ideas, feel free to include them in your motivation letter. As we conduct applied social research, please indicate your research skills and link them to previous experiences such as research seminars, projects, internships or summer schools.

Good written and spoken German is a MUST for the internship. However, Vienna is multilingual. Therefore, we welcome candidates who speak other languages such as Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian (BCS) OR Turkish OR Arabic OR Farsi.

Was bieten wir an?

August 2024.

Arbeitspensum: 20/h Woche.
