Building a food safety Blockchain prototype

Blockchain is a transformational technology that is helping drive business value across industries by saving time, reducing costs, lowering risks, and enabling new business models. The value of blockchain use in traceability systems is predicated on the rapidity of querying the system, the simultaneous capabilities of anonymity and transparency, and the immutable and shared nature of the system. If supply chain data such as product, origin details, batch numbers, sampling results, processing data and expiration dates and shipping details can be digitally recorded on blockchain, it may become possible to verify the history, location, and status of a food product efficiently. This would improve transparency and efficiency throughout the food supply chain such as an efficient management in case of emergencies.

In this project, we will explore using open-source blockchain bases, such as Hyperledger composer and Hyperledger Fabric, to build a blockchain prototype for food safety (e.g Chicken meat supply chain). Hyperledger Composer (https://hyperledger.github.io/composer) is an open-source set of tools designed to make building blockchain applications easier.

The following tasks are foreseen in this project:

  1. Literature review in the use of Blockchain in food supply chain and food safety.
  2. Design a simple food chain network using the data from studies performed by WFSR (e.g Chicken meat): supply chain actors (e.g. farmers, consumers, processors and authority), assets (e.g. chicken meat, samples), and transactions (e.g. placing orders and taking samples).
  3. Model the designed food chain network in a blockchain using Hyperledger Composer and test the logic that makes the system works.
  4. Use the developed blockchain to learn the use of queries in a blockchain to filter results returned using criteria and to perform operations on result sets, such as updating or removing assets.

2019-2494 Internship Powertrain Evaluation

Company General Information:
TOYOTA is one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers and a leading global corporation. Founded in 1937. Toyota now sells vehicles in 170 countries and employs over 300.000 people.
Based in Brussels, Belgium, and staffed by 2.700 people and more than 60 nationalities, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) handles the wholesale marketing of Toyota and Lexus vehicles, parts & accessories, and manages Toyota’s European R&D, manufacturing and engineering operations.
For Toyota, Quality is a way of life. Nothing is so good that it cannot be made better, that is why we strive for continuous improvement in everything we do. This basic principle for us is called: “KAIZEN” and is what guides us in our pursuit of best Quality and the delivery of unparalleled customer’s satisfaction.

Team/division:
TME’s European R&D centre is responsible for planning, development and production-support of vehicles aimed at -and locally produced for- the European market. Our target is to develop cars that match and exceed European customers’ requirements and expectations.
The Drivetrain Evaluation Dept. is part of the Powertrain Engineering group. Our main activity is functional & durability evaluation of engine & transmission units. Additionally we take care of test facility management (mainly engine test benches and vehicle roller benches) as well as (software) tool development.

Your project:
Customer needs are evolving and cars are expected to be operated quite differently in the foreseeable future. As Toyota we are continuously trying to grasp our customers’ requirements and expectations. To that end we are currently collecting large amounts of real-life vehicle operation data from field tests all over Europe. To analyze these vast amounts of data we are relying on in-house developed dedicated software tools which need constant functional extension & operational improvements.
You will be joining the Drivetrain Evaluation Dept. responsible for the development & maintenance of these tools. Development focus will be on data analysis tools that try to correlate customer’s (subjective) feedback with objective (physical) vehicle measurement data.
You will work in close co-operation with our colleagues in engine and drivetrain evaluation. A sound understanding of underlying physics is key to properly analyze driving data.

Your tasks:
• Functional extension & operational improvements to our in-house data-processing tool chain, largely based on National Instruments “DIAdem” data analysis software.
• Develop new tools in Matlab and Python or similar data processing platforms.
• Overall data management system topology enhancements, especially with regards to interfacing to our test facility databases.

Your profile:
• Master or Bachelor looking for a long-term internship (12 months) to gather practical business experience.
• Strong interest/affinity with programming combined with a general background in engineering.
• Flexible team player, open personality.
• Computer skills:
- Scripting languages: Visual Basic, C#, Python, MatLab (MEX-Functions, S-Functions)
- Notions on relational databases (i.e. SQL) is a plus
- Experience with NI DIAdem is an asset but not a pre-requisit.
• Fluent in English, any other European language is a plus

You have a Toyota DNA, this means you:

• Wish to develop and are ready to persevere in order to reach challenging targets
• Seek facts before making recommendations or decisions
• Have strong planning and organizing skills
• Enjoy working in a team, respecting others
• Have excellent communication skills
