The internship is oriented to IT BSc or MSc students (preferably in their last academic year) who want to introduce themselves in the world of research in IT areas.

During the period of the internship, the applicant will develop a research project from the scratch in the area of Human Computer Interaction, coordinated by the HCI-RG team of the Computational Reflection Research Group of the University of Oviedo.

Objectives

The goal is to participate in the development of a research project, understanding all the typical phases of this kind of project (study of the background, hypothesis development, experimental design and implementation, analysis, etc.), including the dissemination that will consist of the development of a poster and/or a research paper. Projects will be coordinated by local researchers of the University of Oviedo.

Who can apply?

The number of students taking part in the program as Erasmus+ trainees is limited to 2. Vacancies are open to IT students. The program and so all the activities will be run in English. Main Responsibilities:

• Work closely with the founders on data heavy features, especially to determine what questions should be asked and what questions can be answered.

• Curate, generate, and annotate data, and create optimal datasets following responsible data collection and model maintenance practices.

• Make trainable datasets from raw data, using efficient SQL queries and scripting languages, visualising when necessary.

• Utilise your data science knowledge to refine ML models.

• Contribute to design and implementation of ML end-to-end solutions.

Must Have Qualifications:

• Technical:

  • Strong fundamentals in Linear Algebra and Statistics.

  • Knowledge of Python, SQL and familiarity with databases.

  • Experience in building predictive models.

  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques and some exposure to software development.

  • High interest in exploring the field of AI technologies.

• Personal:

  • Passion for data analytics and statistics.

  • Ability to reliably work independently.

  • Strong problem-solving capabilities.

  • Ability  to communicate technical concepts in a way non-technical people can easily understand.

We are a financial engineering software development company with ties to a number of portfolio management firms in Istanbul.

Cell counting in neuroscience has traditionally been performed in sectioned and histochemically labelled material, often by counting all observed objects in a region of interest. One of those cell types that is frequently quantified are Microglia cells, the brains resident immune cells. For this, the brains of the animals are removed and sliced in to thin sections. On these sections we then perform some chemical procedures to visualize our cell population of interest (immunohistochemistry). Subsequently we would quantify every cell we can see in a microscope picture. We have recently reported (Anwer et al., 2023; https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0284480) our machine learning approach to the quantification of Microglia cells. In brief, we have compared and validated different ML architectures that enable the quantification of Microglial cells from tissue sections in a fraction of the time that would taken by a human experimenter.

Given our success in the development of the object allocation and quantification algorithm, we would like to add an object classifier to our model. The Microglial cells are usually equally distributed throughout the brain in what is called their “resting state”. In this state they are surveying their surroundings for pathogens. Upon detection of a foreign substance, such as a bacteria they would become activated and migrate to the site of inflammation. The different activation states are usually characterised by the shape of the cells (see below).
In the proposed MSc project the student will build on our existing model an object classification where the algorithm will be trained to distinguish the located cells based on their appearance.

7. Support in any administrative tasks related to the research projects, demonstrating attention to detail and commitment to our mission of providing the best possible solutions. 

Requirements: 

1. Educational background in Food Science, Nutrition, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or related fields. 

2. Strong research and analytical skills to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions with a sustainability perspective. 

3. Familiarity (able to understand) with food-related regulations, quality standards, and safety protocols, especially those related to environmental impact and CO2 reduction, is a plus. 

4. Passion for understanding food-related information, sustainability, and its impact on the environment.
