More about SHA and Computer Literacy Project:

Social Hackers Academy (SHA) is passionate about improving employability of people by enabling them to use technology. Although, our main activity is running a successful coding school for vulnerable groups, soon after joining local NGOs ecosystem, we have identified that software engineering is way too advanced step for most of those who we would like to benefit from tech education. There are a lot more people than You and Us would image, that lack of even basic digital and computer skills.

This is why in 2019 SHA is powerfully expanding Computer Literacy Class among organisations in Athens, capital of beautiful Greece. It is a basic 20h long digital and computer skills course which we are offering free of charge to other NGOs working with vulnerable groups. Take a look at our CLC curriculum on our website.

We are willing to share the good practises built on the experience in order to avoid a need of all organisations to ‘reinvent their own wheel’, repeat the same mistakes, and start again. We are looking for a long term partners with beneficiaries and technical equipment to build a long term cooperation in running CLC together.

Role description or ‘what matters the most’:

  • CLC mentor will teach people with little or none computer knowledge in organisations working with vulnerable groups in different locations of Athens. Vulnerable groups like youth, refugees, long term unemployed, older people - groups that have some specific characteristics that make it at higher risk of falling into poverty than others living in area.

  • Teaching material (curriculum) and support in preparing for teaching before and throughout the course is provided by SHA, as well as regular meetings with a project coordinator and other mentors to share the feedback and learn from each other’s experiences.

  • Mentor is expected to teach independently in CLC hosting organisation’s premises 2 times a week for 2h per lesson. Depending on other activities during volunteering period, one mentor could be teaching for 2 or more groups of students in the same or different organisation simultaneously, a.k.a. teaching weekly 8h or more.

  • Mentor will learn about:

  • Project management;

  • Communication skills;

  • Computer Literacy gap and NGO ecosystem;

  • Public speaking and presentation skills;

  • Analyzing and resolving challenges of multicultural environment;

  • Their own strengths and weaknesses and how to work around them;

  • Teamwork as well as independent tasks management;

  • Volunteering period could flexible, both short and long term, though should not be less than 2 months.

  • Volunteer mentor is more than welcome to part-time support other SHA activities that would be individually agreed upon person’s interests and skills.
