As a English teacher, your role will be to teach English language lessons for classes of between 10 and 15 adult students. The language classes start from beginner level (for students who don’t know the English alphabet) and progress to intermediate level (for students who have conversational standard). The role involves planning the content of the lessons, preparing the material for the classes, and teaching each lesson. We have the facilities to print materials, and many educational resources you can use. We would also like you to run ‘conversation sessions’, where students can practise spoken English in a less formal setting than a classroom. These would ideally take place once or twice a week, for an hour or more.
The minimum commitment for volunteers is six weeks, with twelve weeks being preferable. All our classes run in twelve week ‘terms’, with a break of one week in the middle. At the end of each term we have a ‘graduation ceremony’ where you will present your students with a certificate of attendance for completing the course.
ANKAA Project MKO is an educational space and vocational training centre for refugees and displaced people in Athens. We aim to promote the positive integration of our students into Greek society. Language is the most important barrier our students face to accessing jobs, schools, healthcare and other services. As well as this, the psychological benefit of education is enormous.
We would love to have you on board!
