Deadline:

General information

Duration:
3 months
Commitment:
3-4 days per week
Description:

Latvian Fund for Nature offers two internship positions for natural sciences Bachelor students interested in working with grassland habitats and plant identification, inventories and monitoring, management and restoration activities in the field, and work with databases. You will have an opportunity to participate in the project GrassLIFE, which is a nation-wide grassland restoration project, dealing with EU priority grassland habitats.

Interns will be provided with the initial training in plant identification and management/restoration assessment upon starting the internship and afterward tasked with independent work under the supervision of an experienced grassland habitat expert. The work will involve extensive fieldwork, sometimes camping in the field, working outdoors in various weather conditions, and participation in practical management and restoration activities in the field (collection of seeds, monitoring works, etc.). We will provide interns with means of transport and will cover the transport and accommodation costs while working in the field (if those costs would not be covered by Erasmus or other scholarships).

We offer a unique opportunity to participate in the hands-on plant identification work, inventory, management, and restoration work, and become a part of a grassland restoration and management team. You will acquire practical skills in the identification and monitoring of grassland plant species, as well as habitat management planning and monitoring.

As an additional option, we can offer several topics for your Bachelor's/Master's Thesis with the opportunity to collect the field data and to build your work on data sets collected by us. Please see the information below in this announcement. We advise you to discuss the topic of your interest with your supervisor at your University. Our experts will provide you with all necessary consultations and information about the data and its context, but your leading supervisor in scientific writing would anyway be from your University so you would need his/her consent and interest in supervising you to write a Thesis on one of the topics suggested in this internship. Please see further information below.

The internship will be undertaken as part of the GrassLIFE project by Latvian Fund for Nature, in cooperation with the University of Latvia.
