General information

Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been touted as a means of dealing with organic wastes while, at the same time, also addressing mankind’s energy needs. The process involves biogas production via the microbial degradation of organic compounds in the absence of oxygen. AD reduces the bulk of organic matter to be disposed, generates digestate rich in nutrients that can be of agricultural value, and produces biogas rich in methane which can be used as fuel directly or can be converted to compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

At Celignis we undertake a number of analysis methods related to anaerobic digestion. These are described at:

The intern will be involved in undertaking a number of tests in this space. Items of equipment that may be used include:

  • Lab-scale digesters.
  • UV spectroscopy.
  • Gas analysers
  • Near infrared spectroscopy.
  • Ion chromatography.
  • Ashing furnaces.

The intern will also get experience in adhering to SOPs and quality control methods as well as evaluating the quality of data produced.

There will be detailed training on the use of equipment and in the digital skills required to fully evaluate the data.

The intern will also undertake activities related to the development of technologies to improve the efficiencies and economics of small-scale AD, potentially helping to advance the industry in Ireland and around the world.

Please note that we are not able to provide any financial support for this internship.
