Backend web developer internship at exciting SaaS scale-up

Before we explain the internship, just know that this is what our interns have to say about working at DESelect:

- "You have given me the confidence to achieve everything I want in life"

- "I love the challenge of coming in every day and trying to figure out how I am going to save more marketers' time by writing code"

- "having fun + serious work = DESelect"

- "Thanks to my internship at DESelect I can now make double as much money working in Turkey"

- "Internship at DESelect is great, a lot of freedom, nice colleagues, challenging tasks, building on an exciting product"

Do you want to:

  • Apply your coding skills to a real project?

  • Experience what a fast-paced international startup environment is like?

  • Work remotely or in Antwerp, depending on whatever is possible due to covid-19?

Then read on!

Who we are

We are a young team with a strong background in dev, SaaS (software-as-a-service), and consulting. We have a fast-growing SaaS startup with customers all over the world, including USA, Europa and Australia, and are an official Salesforce partner. The product we build fixes an actual business problem we have come to learn through project experience. It makes the life of marketing professionals easier (and it is an interesting problem to solve for us :) ).

So what

  • You will get to learn from seasoned entrepreneurs and devs, who have worked as consultants in many international companies and have built multiple startups

  • Duration and your availability (full-time, part-time,…) can be discussed

  • You will be able to work remotely and also join us in our beautiful coworking space in Antwerp overlooking the water

  • You join a young international dev team, with many other interns from all over Europe.

  • The internship can be part to fill requirements for your degree, or be outside of your degree

What we are looking for

We are looking for developers to join our development team to:

  • Continue building the product:

    • Design solutions for new features with the team

    • Implement those solutions

    • Write test code

  • Support customers using the product

We use the following technologies:

Backend:

  • NodeJS

  • Javascript

  • ES6/7

  • MongoDB

  • REST/SOAP API

Good knowledge of NodeJs and javascript is required if you want to apply for this position.

Just FYI, in our front-end we use:

  • ReactJS

  • HTML / CSS / Javascript

  • ES6/7

Besides this, you'll learn about:

  • working with a project management tool (Asana)

  • working with scrum/agile as a project management methodology

  • git

We are looking for people who are:

  • Result-driven

  • Team player

  • Detail-oriented

  • Can work independently

  • Problem solvers

  • Speak and write good English

  • A bit competitive

Note: we don't care about what you study, only about your skills. Our CTO is self-thought and we appreciate self-development.

Note regarding remote work

If the situation allows it, we welcome you to our offices in Antwerp.

However,  due to the current covid-19 situation, many on-site internships are currently not allowed/possible. Besides covid-19, there may be other reasons you may not be in a position to come onsite, like not being able to get a visa or simply because of the cost of travel to / living in Belgium. Whatever may be the case, our company is 100% set up for remote work, and we've always had part of the team working remotely. Here are some of the measures we take to make sure people who are remote can still be engaged: daily status meetings, tea time breakouts to talk casually, monthly team meetings to have drinks, weekly demo sessions, chat sessions, meetings with team members when you need support/help,...

Compensation

This is an unpaid internship. Though we don't pay you, we do invest in you by providing you access to tools, a beautiful coworking space, and spending time on coaching you and facilitating your learning (more on that in the next paragraph). This internship provides you with the time and environment to build up real-life experience that employers are looking for (we might hire you ourselves, more on that later). If you can get the Erasmus grant, that will cover the majority of your living expenses.

How you will learn, even in a remote setting

Learning comes mainly from day-to-day work. We don't really do classes or whatever (we're a company, not a school), but you will learn by doing through:

- developing user stories yourself in a large application (thus also seeing how other challenges were implemented in the past)

- reviewing the work of other developers (seeing how others solve challenges)

- getting your own work reviewed by both one peer developer, one senior team lead, and the CTO (20 years experience in programming)

Whenever somebody is stuck on something, developers jump on calls with each other to help each other out.

You'll also learn how a SaaS scale-up is run from an organizational, sales, and marketing point of view.

Timing

We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible, ideally for 3-4 months. However, we don't do internships for less than 3 months, simply because of the time it takes to ramp up new team members.

After the internship

We have a history of hiring people who do internships with us. If we're happy with your work, it's possible we offer you a freelance contract to continue working with us remotely, part-time or full-time, whether you graduate or are still a student. If we're VERY happy about your work, it's possible we switch to a freelance contract even before the internship is over.
