Description:

Mucus moisturizes, lubricates, and protects epithelia from pathogenic invaders, including viruses. Mucus gels can trap virus particles smaller than their mesh size and allow virus clearance by active mucus circulation.

In a previous project, we found that synthetic “mucus-like” gels can mimic the self-healing behavior of natural mucus and provide excellent lubricity; in addition, those “mucus-like” gels are effective in inhibiting HIV-1 and HSV-2 infections in vitro as reported in Adv. Sci. 2022. The work was reported in the media worldwide, including, the Times and Sunday Times, AFP Paris, and MSN news.
