Description:

Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre and Cattery is one of the busiest Wildlife Hospitals and Rehabilitation Centres in the UK, admitting up to 7,000 wild, exotic and domestic animals each year. The hospital, which has the largest resident clinical wildlife veterinary team in the UK, is also a clinical rotation site for University of Liverpool School of Veterinary Science. The veterinary team, including a RCVS Advanced Practitioner, Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (ZooMed) holder and Honorary Lecturer at Liverpool University, have training opportunities for qualified veterinary surgeons with an interest in wildlife and exotics medicine and wildlife rehabilitation. Clinical Veterinary Internships We are offering 2 x twelve-month clinical internships at our Wildlife Centre and Cattery in 2019/20. We are looking for qualified veterinary surgeons, ideally with a minimum of 1-year experience in clinical practice. Candidates must be eligible for RCVS membership, and should have a keen interest in wildlife and exotic medicine. The role is unpaid but extensive training will be provided in wild animal examination and triage, diagnostics, stabilisation, anaesthesia, surgery, medicine, parasitology, radiography, euthanasia and post mortem examination. Depending on caseload and ability, some domestic surgical and medical training and opportunities may also be provided. Depending on clinical ability, there is likely to be opportunity for interns to provide regular paid locum cover for both domestic and wildlife to help financially support the internship. The role involves full time work in the wildlife hospital and on site cattery, and requires working shifts, including evenings and weekends. There will be exposure and training with a huge range, and large caseload of British wildlife species as well as some work with exotics, such as rabbits, ferrets and reptiles, and domestic animal work with our on site cattery. After an initial training period, there will be some degree of sole charge although there is support available from experienced vets. The interns are involved with teaching the final year vet students who come to Stapeley for their clinical exotics and wildlife rotation, so an interest and willingness to be involved in teaching is important. We are looking for a hard working, excellent team player, with confidence and enthusiasm and a commitment to wildlife medicine, who is keen to learn, and support our veterinary team throughout the year. The internships typically run from September and January, although dates can be flexible for the right candidate. Accommodation may be provided on site, but this is limited and on a first come first served basis. We are currently recruiting for September 2019 – September 2020 and January 2020 – January 2021 although dates may be negotiable.
